History
Clyde A. Erwin High School, Asheville, North Carolina
Clyde A. Erwin High School, nestled in the rolling hills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in
Western Carolina, has a current student enrollment of approximately 1300 students.
Erwin High School was cited as a North Carolina ‘School of Distinction’ in 2009, 2006,
2005 and 2004; ‘A School of Progress’ in 2003 and 2002; and an ‘Exemplary School’
in 1998.
Erwin High School was named for the great educator, Dr. Clyde Atkinson Erwin, who
served for 18 years as State Superintendent of Education. Dr. Erwin initiated the nine
month school term and twelve year public school period during his tenure.
Also, Dr. Erwin introduced free textbooks for all elementary school students; established
a health program for all schools; and created standards of certification for teachers. This
resulted in teacher benefits such as salary increases and a retirement program.
Dr. Erwin believed that every child should have the opportunity to develop his academic
talents to the greatest extent. He felt it was his duty to make it possible for the school
children of North Carolina “to see clearly, act courageously, and find their way to peace
and security.”
Clyde A. Erwin High School has competed in most sports, including baseball, since 1956. |
